Over the years I’ve asked my husband to build certain things. A club house for the kids, a chicken coop, a raised garden spot to name a few. He does a great job, but it takes FOREVER.
I’m always telling him to just build it. Just put it together. Don’t over think it. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
2 Lessons from A Perfectionist
My husband is always telling me if it’s 1/8 of an inch off at one end it will be an inch and a half off at the other end. I never believed him until we decided to take out the wood raised garden and rebuild it with cinder blocks.
Lesson 1
As you can see from this picture, he’s right. He knew it was going to be off, but he figured he’d have to adjust as he went.
And you can just see the top block hangs over just a smidge.
Because of this gap, he’s willing to tear half of it apart and redo it. I’m not gonna let him do that. He’s just going to have to accept it.
To be honest, I don’t really care about such small things, but he does. Although when it’s all done, it’s near perfect. And I love it. I’d do it just good enough and I’d be fine with that too.
Lesson 2
I’m often the same way with my relationship with Jesus. I’m not perfect and I don’t think my Lord expects me to be perfect, but He does say to be holy as He is holy. To do everything unto Him.
1 Peter 1:16
16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Colossians 3:17
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Sometimes I think the time I spent in the Word or in Prayer was good enough. I think though, that He wants more from me.
Just like in construction, if I’m an 1/8 off in my quiet time with the Lord then I’m gonna be an inch and a half off in my patience with others or in my trust of the Lord.
In my opinion, Perfectionism is bondage. We can get way to caught up in what others think of us, then that also brings about anxiety. Also bondage.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Final Musings
I guess when it comes to construction and my relationship with the Lord, I need to be more. It can’t always be just good enough. I want to be more for Him so He can use me. I am grateful for the lessons He and my husband teach me. lol

My father was the same way when he was building something. As a child I watched him build our home. A tape measure and level were never far from his hands. He taught me that foundations are vital for a strong structure. If your foundation is off, the building could crumble. Same goes with our relationship with the Lord. This is a good reminder for me, too. I am trying to have consistent evening prayer times, but it doesn’t take more than a day or two to throw me off the habit. I need to be seeking holiness daily, even when I can’t perfectly apply everything I’ve read in Scripture that day(:

Oh how true that is. To get distracted and get off track. It happens to me more often than I care to admit but if we are off track for too long our spirit suffers as well does our other relationships. 😊 thank you for your thoughts.
