To My College Bound Son

As the days of your time at home come quickly to a close, I’ve been feeling the affects of your absence.
Thinking of you leaving the shelter of my mothering wings tightens my chest and brings tears to my eyes. I will miss you so very much.

I wonder to myself, was I a good enough mom? Are you ready for this next part of your journey? Will you be safe from the evils of this world without me? Will you seek first the kingdom of God? Will you trust and rely on Jesus to guide your steps? I hope so.  I will pray!

As your mom, my goal is and always has been to raise a fine young man.  To push you from the nest when it’s time for you to fly.  I believe it is time.  But I don’t like it.

Since it’s time, I want you to know a few things.

First, that we are so very proud of you.  Proud that you’ve chosen college as the next step.  Proud that you’ve done most all the decision making and work to get where you are, on your own.

Proud that you’ve chosen to serve our great state as a police officer even during this time of attacks against the men in blue.  We are proud of the man you are becoming.  Proud that you continue to seek the Lord in your own way, even though so much doesn’t make sense yet.

Second, I want you to know we are always here for you.  When and what ever you need, please call and ask.  We may say no, but only because we know you can do it on your own.  The mommy in me will always want to fix it for you, but tough love is almost always the best policy.

Third, when things look bleak, when life feels tough, when an assignment is so huge you’re just not sure you can get it done, PRAY!  The Lord is with you always.  You only have to say His name.

For further instructions, read Romans 12.  Then read it again.

My final thoughts, ENGAGE.  Get connected with other believers.  Look into the churches in the area.  There is a CMA in your new town. Go check it out.  Get involved with outside activities the college offers.  (Are you ready for some football?!!!)

Make friends and have fun.  NOT too much fun!  🙂

And remember, your room?  It will never be the same.  Next time you see it?  It will be a music/workout/guest room.  Don’t forget that.  I know that hurts just a bit, but I do not want you be too comfortable when you come home for a visit.  Leaving the nest is basically permanent.
